What better lecture to be added to our spooky October than to talk about illusionist escape artist and stunt performer Harry Houdini. Journalist and historian Jack Grodeska will deliver, what will surely be, an interesting history of this mysterious man. This free lecture begins at 7:30pm.

This lecture is given by commercial diver, Richard Simon. We are all familiar with Simon Lake’s sub, the Argonaut, as its replica sits right down in Atlantic Highlands Harbor. But among other submarines he built, there was one called the Defender. Lost for almost 80 years, it was finally found in Long Island Sound. Come and listen to this interesting story of the history of Lake, the Defender and its discovery. This free lecture begins at 7:30pm.

We are coming up on our 44th year of hosting our annual Flea Market. Always a crowd pleaser, it is attended by thousands of people each year. This year, we will have more vendors and more merchandise of a very eclectic variety. Anything you may be looking for can be found at the AHHS flea market. Open from 10am to 4pm. We are pleased to have back at the mansion the wonderful Jaqueline Quirk. Jaqueline is a world renowned Soprano opera singer. She has performed all over the world in many well known operas. To attend one of these venues can be expensive. But, you can see her perform at the Strauss Mansion Museum and the cost is only $20. Join us in August to continue our Music at the Mansion Series. On August 30th, we will welcome Renee Maskin and special guest, Cranston Dean. Her genre of music is country, rock and folk. She is a singer/songwriter and has already made a name for herself. She has performed all over New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, including opening up for Chrissy Hinds and the Pretenders. And then, add Cranston Dean into the mix. This going to be an amazing concert. This outdoor event takes place on August 30th starting at 7:30pm(weather permitting). Back by popular demand. A community comes together to enjoy some great food and enjoyable conversation. All that you need to do is bring a covered dish. Maybe something that is your signature dish. Make sure it is enough to feed more than a few people. Bring your favorite beverage. As in the title, this will take place on the panoramic wraparound porch at the Strauss Mansion Museum. The festivities begin at 6:30pm. Just in time for a gorgeous sunset. In case of rain, we can always move it inside. So come out and meet your back door neighbors and beyond. We do also ask that you bring a non-perishable food item or baby product to be donated to our local food panty.

We will again be hosting our annual History Cruise on the Navesink Queen. This enjoyable event will take place on August 11th. The boat will be leaving out of Pier 1(behind Sissy’s) at the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor. Departure time is promptly at 12pm. Lunch, snacks and desserts are included with a cash bar. No outside food or beverages will be allowed. We are happy to say our speaker will again be historian and journalist, Muriel Smith. The boat will take us along the bay into Highlands and up the Navesink River. It will then cruise up to Sandy Hook and Fort Hancock along Officers Row. Age limit for this event is 16 or older. Take Me Out To The Ball Game. That’s right, it’s that time again. Always a crowd pleaser. What better way to spend a summer day then at a free Vintage Baseball Game. So, come out on Saturday, July 13th, to watch how baseball used to be played. NO GLOVES! This event will be taking place at the Atlantic Highlands Fireman’s Field right on West Highland Ave and Avenue C. Gates open at 9:30 am and events start at 10:00 am. The first game starts at 11:00 am. There will be games for the kids, entertainment and a snack shack for your food and beverage purchase. Or bring your own cooler and make it a picnic.

This lecture will be on peanut stone, a widely used building material during the turn of the century. Our speakers will be Sheila Weinstock, from the Highlands Historical Society, and Bob Zelinski. From homes, bridges and yard walls, you can see it used on locations all around the surrounding towns. This free lecture begins at 7:30pm.

We will be starting off our monthly Music at the Mansion with a fantastic group. Pat Conley, and his band, The Pints bring such upbeat music to our back yard. If you like a little rock, a little country and a little pop, you are going to love this group. Bring your lawn chair and your favorite snacks and beverage and sit back to listen to some great music. Freelance writer and historian, Jack Grodeska, will be discussing another American Revolutionary War hero, Captain Adam Hyler. As a privateer, Hyler, on his sloop called Revenge, and some small whaleboats, made several raids on British ships right here in the Raritan Bay and New York harbor. This free lecture start at 7:30pm.

Author and historian Rick Geffken will be discussing American military officer and privateer, Joshua Huddy. Huddy was revered as a local hero of the Revolutionary War. Come and listen to his history and maybe learn some things about him you didn’t know. This free lecture begins at 7:30pm on May 15th.

***SOLD OUT**Join historian and paranormal investigator Greg Caggiano on Friday, October 27th for an evening of ghostly tales at the historic and haunted Strauss Mansion Museum, which was built in 1893. Greg will discuss an in-depth history of the house and its former owners as well as recount a decade of paranormal encounters and provide audio and visual evidence captured on-site. Also included is a tour of the 21-room mansion and a ghost hunting equipment demonstration where we will see if we can contact any of our resident spirits. Is it true? Do we have our own form of the Loch Ness Monster right here in Monmouth County? Come listen to hear Jack tell the story of this elusive creature that was spotted on numerous occasions by several people right in the Shrewsbury River. A great story to tell during the Halloween season. You may not want to go back in the water after hearing this tale. Jack is a well known journalist and historian with great knowledge of the history of our area. This is a free lecture at the Strauss Mansion Museum. Donations are gladly accepted. You can ’t go wrong with a move that stars the great Vincent Price and Diana Rigg. Join us for a special 50th anniversary. An evening of Shakespeare and murder. Vincent plays a deceased Shakespearean actor who returns from the grave to seek revenge on his critics He does this by killing them in ways portrayed in Shakespearean plays. Our local historian, Greg Caggiano, will be on hand to introduce the movie and also give a brief lecture on the career of Vincent Price and Atlantic Highlands own connection to Shakespeare. What better way to watch this classic silent film than on the big screen. For our second showing of original vampire movie of Nosferatu, we are again bringing to our local movie theater, Smodcastle. Not only will you be able to enjoy this film as it was originally viewed, but it will be accompanied by the great sound effects and music created by the amazing band led by Cody McCorry. Helene Stapinski, along with co-author, Bonnie Siegler, wrote of a wonderful book called “The American Way”. The tagline for this book is “A true story of Nazi Escape, Superman and Marilyn Monroe”. An interesting excerpt from the book is about Bonnie Siegler’s grandfather. In 1954, he was the one who filmed Marilyn Monroe’s famous scene of her skirt billowing up over the subway grate in NYC. Come listen to this and other interesting true stories about her grandfather and more cast of characters. This is a free event that begins at 7:30pm at the Strauss Mansion Museum.
