This lecture is given by commercial diver, Richard Simon. We are all familiar with Simon Lake’s sub, the Argonaut, as its replica sits right down in Atlantic Highlands Harbor. But among other submarines he built, there was one called the Defender. Lost for almost 80 years, it was finally found in Long Island Sound. Join us in August to continue our Music at the Mansion Series. On August 30th, we will welcome Renee Maskin and special guest, Cranston Dean. Her genre of music is country, rock and folk. She is a singer/songwriter and has already made a name for herself. She has performed all over New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, including opening up for Chrissy Hinds and the Pretenders. And then, add Cranston Dean into the mix. This going to be an amazing concert. This outdoor event takes place on August 30th starting at 7:30pm(weather permitting). Back by popular demand. A community comes together to enjoy some great food and enjoyable conversation. All that you need to do is bring a covered dish. Maybe something that is your signature dish. Make sure it is enough to feed more than a few people. Bring your favorite beverage. As in the title, this will take place on the panoramic wraparound porch at the Strauss Mansion Museum. The festivities begin at 6:30pm. Just in time for a gorgeous sunset. In case of rain, we can always move it inside. So come out and meet your back door neighbors and beyond. We do also ask that you bring a non-perishable food item or baby product to be donated to our local food panty.

Jersey Journey-History Cruise on the Navesink Queen

We will again be hosting our annual History Cruise on the Navesink Queen. This enjoyable event will take place on August 11th. The boat will be leaving out of Pier 1(behind Sissy’s) at the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor. Departure time is promptly at 12pm. Lunch, snacks and desserts are included with a cash bar. No outside food or beverages will be allowed. We are happy to say our speaker will again be historian and journalist, Muriel Smith. The boat will take us along the bay into Highlands and up the Navesink River. It will then cruise up to Sandy Hook and Fort Hancock along Officers Row. Age limit for this event is 16 or older. Greg will discuss an in-depth history of the house and its former owners as well as recount a decade of paranormal encounters and provide audio and visual evidence captured on-site. Also included is a tour of the 21-room mansion and a ghost hunting equipment demonstration where we will see if we can contact any of our resident spirits. You can ’t go wrong with a move that stars the great Vincent Price and Diana Rigg. Join us for a special 50th anniversary. An evening of Shakespeare and murder. Vincent plays a deceased Shakespearean actor who returns from the grave to seek revenge on his critics He does this by killing them in ways portrayed in Shakespearean plays. Our local historian, Greg Caggiano, will be on hand to introduce the movie and also give a brief lecture on the career of Vincent Price and Atlantic Highlands own connection to Shakespeare. Speaker Series-Helene Stapinski and the American Way.

Helene Stapinski, along with co-author, Bonnie Siegler, wrote of a wonderful book called “The American Way”. The tagline for this book is “A true story of Nazi Escape, Superman and Marilyn Monroe”. An interesting excerpt from the book is about Bonnie Siegler’s grandfather. In 1954, he was the one who filmed Marilyn Monroe’s famous scene of her skirt billowing up over the subway grate in NYC. Come listen to this and other interesting true stories about her grandfather and more cast of characters. This is a free event that begins at 7:30pm at the Strauss Mansion Museum.
